As of early October 2019, we are no longer offering our Premium SSL Certificates as part of eHQ license renewals.
Why the change?
We sourced our Premium SSL Certificates from the world-leading provider of Extended Validation (EV) Certificates, Digicert. While EV Certificates provide the same level of security and encryption as regular certificates, they did have the added benefit of displaying the organisation name right in the browser, as you can see below.
Therefore they were an attractive add-on to any website as it provided an additional level of branding and reassurance for the visitor that they were on the right website.
However, in their newest versions, just about all major browsers have decided to move the organisation name from the prominent spot in the browser bar into the certificate information. In order to see the organisation name now, a visitor will have to actively click into the certificate.
Given the extra step and the lot less prominent new spot of the organisation's name, we believe that EV Certificates have lost their attractiveness as that additional level of branding and reassurance and we have therefore decided to no longer offer this as an add-on to eHQ.
We have a EV Certificate in my current license. What happens?
First off, the vast majority of eHQ sites do not have an EV certificate but instead are secured by an equally secure and free Let's Encrypt certificate.
If you have an EV aka Premium SSL Certificate as part of your license, we will continue to honor this until it expires. Upon expiry we will automatically convert the EV certificate to a free Let's Encrypt certificate, you don't have to do anything.
If you are unsure if you ever had a Premium SSL Certificate installed, feel free to enquire with us and we will tell you.
Our IT team insists on EV Certificates. Can we keep it?
The short answer to this is yes, we can help you install a EV certificate on your eHQ site. The only difference to our own certificates is that you will have to source it yourself.
If you would like to learn more about this, please email us at support@engagementhq.com or ask your eHQ Engagement Manager.
